According to the Polish law, health insurance is obligatory. PhD students as responsible to comply the necessary formalities according to their status.
In case of students who are up to 26 years old, the obligation to register for health insurance rests with parents, grandparents or legal guardians.
Doctoral students who are Polish citizens, holders of Polish Card or a certificate of Polish origin should submit a declaration to the Association of Doctoral Students of the Jagiellonian University on not being subject to health insurance for another title and an application for the insurance. Citizens of UE/EFTA
Doctoral students from EU/EFTA member states should have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) issued in their own country.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles the holder to health benefits which are necessary for medical reasons during a stay in a given EU/EFTA member state. Doctoral students are obliged to ensure validity of their card throughout the period of their doctoral studies.
Citizens of non-EU countries
Citizens on non-EU countries should sign a contract for voluntary health insurance with the Polish National Health Found (in Polish – Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia NFZ) and they themselves pay for monthly health insurance (unless they have a Polish Card or a certificate of Polish origin, in which case the obligation to pay health insurance premiums rest at the university).

For foreign doctoral students who are from outside the EU, the insurance currently costs 46.80 PLN monthly and should be paid to the account of assigned by the Social Insurance Institution (in Polish – Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych ZUS).
